Senior Accountant Takes On New Challenge - 25/06/08

A senior figure at leading Tees Valley chartered accountants Baines Jewitt has taken on a new role at the firm where he has spent almost five decades. Geoffrey Hopper, who joined the firm in 1961, has taken on a consultancy role after retiring as Baines Jewitt’s senior partner. As a consultant, he will continue to advise clients including some of the largest family businesses in the region.

Geoffrey qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and became a partner at the firm in 1968. He subsequently played a key role in its growth to become one of the largest accountancy and business and tax advisors in the Tees Valley area.

He says: “The greatest satisfaction in this role comes from working alongside clients to help their business grow over 15 or 20 years, from the point when they decide to start a business to the sale of what has become a substantial company, making them millionaires in the process.

“The biggest thing you can do is to give a client the confidence to go a step further. Many businesses reach a certain size and are happy to stay that way. By having someone like us alongside them, who can deal with the revenue authorities on their behalf, keep them compliant with complex company and tax legislation and advise on issues like employment law and management information – which is crucial to effective decision-making – we can help them do what they do best, which is running their business, and give them the confidence to keep moving forward.”
