Accountants Back Charity Runners - 02/12/2008Baines Jewitt and their staff have helped to boost a children’s cancer charity with a place very close to one employee’s heart. Receptionist Claire Dixon and husband Paul were first introduced to CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, when daughter Caitlin was diagnosed with a brain tumour on her optic nerve, shortly after her first birthday in November 2005. Since then, Caitlin has undergone long-term chemotherapy, which finally ended in June 2007, and now continues to have an MRI scan every six months, to monitor any changes in her condition. Although she has lost the sight in one eye, she lives the active life of any healthy four-year-old, attending both nursery and regular dance classes. For the last three years, Paul, a Royal Mail driver, has taken part in the Great North Run in aid of CLIC Sargent. Also taking part in this year’s event in Newcastle, on 5 October, was Lee Goldsmith, a Baines Jewitt colleague of Clare’s, who works in the tax department. Lee, who took up running about a year ago as a way to keep fit after he stopped playing football, also contributed to Paul’s fundraising for CLIC Sargent, which totalled £1,000. Clare said: “We were introduced to CLIC Sargent when Caitlin was first diagnosed. They have been really supportive and this is our way of saying thank you for their help.” Baines Jewitt partner Trevor Cook’s son Christopher also took part in the run in aid of research into motor neurone disease. Christopher, who is studying computer forensics at Northumbria University in Newcastle, was taking part in the run for the first time, following in the footsteps of his father, who has completed it on several occasions. Trevor said: “We are delighted to be able to help our colleagues and friends who took part in the run in supporting these very worthwhile causes.” For more information, call 01642 632032
