Jewitts Centenary - 30/08/2007
Baines Jewitt Chartered Accountants was established in April 2004 when Baines Goldston and Jewitts merged to create one of the largest accounting firms in the Tees Valley. Behind the two names is a long and proud history. Baines was formed in 1923 but the roots of Jewitts go back to 1907 making 2007 the centenary year of the Firm in its original format.
It began when Richard Jewitt opened a practice in Stockton in 1907 trading as Richard Jewitt & Co from 133 High Street from where he acted for a family company, descendants of which are still clients of the Firm.
His son Thomas joined in 1911 and around the same time, Thomas’ cousin William Jewitt, was in practice in Stockton. In 1935 Clifford Sparrow became articled to William, eventually taking over from him and the two Practices came together during the 1940s, to become Richard Jewitt, Sparrow & Co. with offices in 62/63 High Street between the Vane Arms and the Black Lion. In 1955 Rowland Swinbank, 70 High Street, Stockton joined to create Jewitt, Sparrow & Swinbank, when they all moved to Barrington House, part of the existing premises in Yarm Lane.
Over the years the Firm managed the affairs of most of the larger family businesses in the area. Some excellent accountancy talent and highly regarded individuals were trained and became Partners including Ron Bulman, Alan Cook, Peter Bethell, Derrick Grass, John McGrother and Howard Murray. Howard became a Partner in 1971 and only retired from the Firm earlier this year
Last but not least of the current Partners at Baines Jewitt, Jeremy (Jed) Lester and Don Adams trained and qualified with Jewitts.
The Partners and staff are proud of the history of the Firm and the relationships that have been maintained over the years and anticipate that the same high levels of service and quality will continue for many years.
