Young people kickstart professional careers with Baines Jewitt

Three young people have started their professional careers at Baines Jewitt.

Matthew Henry, Ivy Conway and Jacob Spence have all joined our Stockton-based firm as part of our company’s drive to lay solid foundations for its future.

Newcastle University graduate Matthew, from Ingleby Barwick, has a first-class degree in Accounting and Finance.  Appointed as a trainee chartered accountant, he is already gaining hands-on experience in the workplace by assisting with accounts preparation and control account reconciliations. As part of his professional development programme, Matthew is also working towards an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) qualification.

When he isn’t working or studying, Matthew plays cricket for Maltby Cricket Club and is a Middlesbrough F.C. season ticket holder.

Ivy, also from Ingleby Barwick, was looking for an alternative to university, so decided to pursue her career via the apprenticeship route. This means she benefits from a combination of on-the-job learning with earning a wage, in-house mentoring and a structured technical training programme.

Ivy has joined Baines Jewitt as a personal tax apprentice following A-Levels in English, Law and History.  Although she is not new to the world of work, as she had two part-time jobs throughout school and college, Ivy’s apprenticeship is her first professional role.

Working as part of our firm’s busy tax team, Ivy will play a key role in supporting Baines Jewitt’s accountancy and finance functions.  As well as helping with the administration of tax returns and compliance, Ivy is working towards an Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification.  There will also be an opportunity for her to progress her career further, such as becoming a chartered tax adviser in the future.

In her free time away from work, Ivy enjoys socialising with her friends, travelling and live music.

Jacob, who lives in Yarm, has joined Baines Jewitt as a trainee accounting technician, following A-Levels in Maths, Economics and Business.

With a desire to forge a career in accountancy, Jacob made a speculative enquiry to Baines Jewitt whilst studying towards his A-Levels. As a result, he was invited in for some work experience and delighted to be offered a full-time professional training role shortly afterwards.

As well as gaining valuable hands-on experience in the workplace, by helping with audit and accounts preparation, Jacob is working towards an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 qualification. This will provide him with a solid foundation of core skills, as well as enabling him to study towards becoming a chartered accountant at a later date.

When not working or studying, Jacob enjoys playing and coaching tennis.

Talking of the firm’s latest intake of trainees, Don Adams, director, Baines Jewitt said: “We understand the importance of looking to the future so believe in recruiting high calibre, enthusiastic people who are committed to attaining professional qualifications and can grow with our firm.

“For Matthew, Ivy and Jacob, this is their first professional job role and we are looking forward to helping them develop their careers. As well as earning while they learn and gaining practical experience in the workplace, all three will receive additional support towards their studies and exam preparation.”
