Pastures new for Janet

One of Baines Jewitt’s longest standing employees is leaving the firm at the end of March 2024 to take retirement.

Janet Powson, who has over 30 years’ continuous service, first started with Baines Jewitt – through one of our predecessor firms Baines, Goldston and Jackson – in 1986.  After a brief spell away due to the relocation of her family, and maternity leave, Janet returned to the firm in 1990, and has remained ever since.

Having gained an accountancy degree after ‘A’ Levels, Janet initially worked on accounts and audits for a private firm of accountants in West Yorkshire. This was followed by a job in the accounts department at a multi-national FTSE 100 gas company.

Since joining Baines Jewitt, Janet has gained a whole wealth of experience across accountancy and tax disciplines for a range of different clients and sectors. She has also reported to three different bosses, including Baines Jewitt directors Mike Bigley, Don Adams and Jed Lester.

Janet’s latest role has involved working in Baines Jewitt’s tax department as a tax manager.

As a firm which boasts an excellent long-service record, Janet sheds light on what she believes makes Baines Jewitt such a desirable place to work.

“I joined the firm towards the beginning of my career and have really enjoyed building great relationships with my colleagues and clients. There have been lots of changes over the years too, which helps keep things interesting.  These include our company merger, the introduction of new technology, regular changes in tax legislation and our recent move to modern office premises.”

A keen hillwalker, Janet has no intention of resting on her laurels in retirement. As well as spending more time with her grandchildren, she has already signed up for two charity challenges:
