In a bid to simplify the way in which taxpayers and agents use online services, the Government is rolling out plans to replace Government Gateway accounts with a new system.<\/p>\n

The GOV.UK One Login will be gradually introduced over the next three years, with an investment of \u00a3305 million.<\/p>\n
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will be one of the first Government departments to roll out the service \u2013 replacing the existing Government Gateway system which was introduced more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n
What is a GOV.UK One Login account?<\/strong><\/p>\n Led by the Cabinet Office, the initiative will make all online Government services available in one place.<\/p>\n Once you have created an account, you will be able to access all central Government services online without having to create separate accounts and passwords for each department.<\/p>\n It will ultimately replace the HMRC-specific Government Gateway and incorporate these services into a single point of access.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll be able to access tax and Self-Assessment submissions, as well as other services such as Universal Credit, student loan information and DBS checks.<\/p>\n How will GOV.UK One Login impact me?<\/strong><\/p>\n Any changes to accessing tax systems are likely to be challenging for individuals and businesses.<\/p>\n However, the aim of this initiative is to make all Government web services, including submitting Self-Assessment returns and meeting tax obligations, more accessible for more people.<\/p>\n For example, the Government will prevent fraud and enhance \u2018digital inclusion\u2019 with two-factor authentication and provisions for identity verification for those without photo ID.<\/p>\n For this reason, you\u2019ll be required to provide a suitable phone number or email address to receive security codes.<\/p>\n The new system will also mean that you\u2019ll be able to access all Government online services in one place, which significantly simplifies the existing set up.<\/p>\n We advise anyone concerned about accessing HMRC services online under the new system to get in touch with us.<\/p>\n What about agent roll-out?<\/strong><\/p>\n Agent roll-out is likely to be more complex, for those using HMRC\u2019s services on behalf of another party.<\/p>\n HMRC has not yet clarified how this transition will take place.<\/p>\n For now, agents should continue to use Government Gateway services as normal.<\/p>\n How do I transition to One Login?<\/strong><\/p>\n HMRC will begin its rollout of One Login by contacting individuals and advising them to migrate, starting in Spring 2024.<\/p>\n You will be told when and how to create a GOV.UK One Login account to replace your Government Gateway.<\/p>\n You do not need to contact HMRC.<\/p>\n
