{"id":2127,"date":"2017-11-20T11:03:54","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T11:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2127"},"modified":"2017-11-20T11:03:54","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T11:03:54","slug":"hammond-urged-support-manufacturing-autumn-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/hammond-urged-support-manufacturing-autumn-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Hammond urged to support manufacturing in Autumn Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called on the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, to address the UK\u2019s \u201cproductivity problem\u201d by using this week\u2019s Autumn Budget announcements to extend greater support to British manufacturers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Speaking in recent days, CBI Director General, Carolyn Fairbairn, said that the Government needed to tackle the \u201cweak foundations\u201d of the British economy with \u201cconsistency and determination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that, at a time when Brexit negotiations with Europe are in full swing, the Chancellor must not overlook the \u201cvital action\u201d needed here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only sure way to raise living standards and provide sustainable public services is to solve the UK\u2019s productivity problem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the CBI is calling on the Chancellor to boost British manufacturing activity, after its latest industrial trends survey revealed that growth in the sector was waning.<\/p>\n<p>In an official pre-Budget letter to Mr Hammond, the CBI has laid out a \u2018wish list\u2019 for the Autumn Budget.<\/p>\n<p>It says that the Government needs to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communicate a clearer plan on its Industrial Strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Reform business rates in order to incentivise \u2018productive investment\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Reach an investment target of 2.4 per cent of GDP on research and development (R&amp;D) by 2027.<\/li>\n<li>Deliver any and all planned infrastructure projects with clear timeframes and implementation plans.<\/li>\n<li>Protect per-pupil funding in schools.<\/li>\n<li>Provide Government departments with resources to \u2018make a success of Brexit\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ms Fairbairn said: \u201cIt\u2019s critical the Budget ensures growth reaches all parts of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bold Industrial Strategy, with a clear delivery timetable and measurable progress is needed to eradicate differences in living standards around the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called on the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, to address the UK\u2019s \u201cproductivity problem\u201d by using this week\u2019s Autumn Budget announcements to extend greater support to British manufacturers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2127"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2127"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2127\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2128,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2127\/revisions\/2128"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2127"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2127"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2127"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
