{"id":2068,"date":"2017-10-09T11:01:34","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T11:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2068"},"modified":"2017-10-09T11:01:34","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T11:01:34","slug":"hmrc-helping-fight-cybercrime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/hmrc-helping-fight-cybercrime\/","title":{"rendered":"HMRC helping to fight cybercrime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of its ongoing crackdown on cybercrime, HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) claims to have commandeered as many as 75 \u2018deceptive websites\u2019.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Revenue claims that it has successfully prevented more than one million visits to \u2018dubious sites\u2019 which it says are unlawfully posing as HMRC or encouraging visitors to contact incorrect or misleading telephone helpline numbers as part of a costly scam.<\/p>\n<p>In many instances, fraudsters are promoting premium rate, non-HMRC numbers as a means of reaching the department, it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are in fact call forwarding services which connect callers to HMRC, but at a hefty price, despite HMRC\u2019s own 0300 numbers being free or charged at the national landline rate,\u201d the tax authority explained in a recent press release.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, HMRC\u2019s cyber security team has taken control of 75 such sites and is now able to automatically redirect taxpayers to its own Gov.uk web pages.<\/p>\n<p>The Revenue also claims that it continues to combat \u201cother types of scams that customers are being targeted by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the last year, HMRC has reportedly requested the removal of some 20,000 \u2018malicious websites\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Angela MacDonald, Director for Customer Services as HMRC, said: \u201cHMRC takes the abuse of its brand very seriously.
