{"id":1954,"date":"2017-07-20T14:02:53","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T14:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1954"},"modified":"2017-07-20T14:02:53","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T14:02:53","slug":"minister-confirms-increase-pension-age-will-brought-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/minister-confirms-increase-pension-age-will-brought-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister confirms increase in pension age will be brought forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government yesterday announced fresh changes to the State Pension age, set to affect around six million Britons.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Under the new arrangements, a move to increase the pension age to 68 will be phased in between 2037 and 2039.<\/p>\n<p>Under the original timetable, this change would not have taken effect until 2044.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to bring the plans forward was announced by David Gauke, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that, following discussions, ministers had elected to follow recommendations made in the Cridland report, an independent review of pension arrangements published earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Commons, Mr Gauke said: \u201cAs life expectancy continues to rise and the number of people in receipt of state pension increases, we need to ensure that we have a fair and sustainable system that is reflective of modern life and protected for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement will mean that those born between April 6<sup>th<\/sup> 1970 and April 5<sup>th<\/sup> 1978 will have to work longer before being eligible for the State payments.<\/p>\n<p>Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Debbie Abrahams criticised the proposals, arguing that many in their sixties suffered from health problems in spite of improvements in life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost pensioners will now spend their retirement battling a toxic cocktail of ill-health,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government talks about making Britain fairer but their pensions policy, whether it is the injustice that 1950s-born women are facing, or today&#8217;s proposals, is anything but fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trade unions and the charity Age UK were also critical of the announcement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government yesterday announced fresh changes to the State Pension age, set to affect around six million Britons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1954"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1954"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1954\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1955,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1954\/revisions\/1955"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1954"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1954"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1954"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
