{"id":1942,"date":"2017-07-14T10:20:41","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T10:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1942"},"modified":"2017-07-14T10:20:41","modified_gmt":"2017-07-14T10:20:41","slug":"businesses-vat-threshold-exempt-making-tax-digital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/businesses-vat-threshold-exempt-making-tax-digital\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses below the VAT threshold to be exempt from Making Tax Digital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Businesses below the existing VAT threshold of \u00a385,000 will be exempt from the Government\u2019s flagship Making Tax Digital (MTD) project, it has been announced.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The news follows widespread concerns voiced by tax and accountancy bodies that the Government\u2019s previous MTD exemption threshold of \u00a310,000 was far too low and would only benefit the UK\u2019s very smallest microbusinesses.<\/p>\n<p>It also marks the first MTD update publicised by HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) since the project was scrapped from this year\u2019s Finance Bill prior to the General Election.<\/p>\n<p>In the interim, it appears that HMRC has also buckled under mounting pressure to reassess its previously imminent MTD timetable.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the tax authority had said that all tax would be 100 per cent digital by 2020 \u2013 and that MTD would be rolled over for landlords and sole traders in April 2018, who would be shortly followed by larger businesses and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>All businesses with an annual turnover above \u00a310,000 would have needed to be MTD-compliant.<\/p>\n<p>Under HMRC\u2019s reformed timetable, however, the project\u2019s rollout has been delayed by a year and will not be phased in until 2019.<\/p>\n<p>From this point, businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold of \u00a385,000 will be expected to begin keeping digital records for VAT purposes, but \u2018full-blown\u2019 quarterly reporting for all other purposes will not begin until \u2018at least 2020\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Mel Stride, financial secretary to the Treasury and the new minister in charge of Making Tax Digital, said: \u201cBusinesses agree that digitising the tax system is the right direction of travel.
