{"id":1687,"date":"2017-01-24T10:20:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T10:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1687"},"modified":"2017-01-24T10:20:13","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T10:20:13","slug":"small-business-owners-failing-fully-understand-tax-returns-study-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/small-business-owners-failing-fully-understand-tax-returns-study-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"Small business owners are failing to fully understand tax returns, study reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study suggests that 31 per cent of small business owners do not know how to correctly submit their tax return, while 27 per cent did not think that they were required to submit one at all.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The survey, which quizzed small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) about their tax return habits, also found that one in four business owners had, in previous years, failed to submit at least one return on time \u2013 and had been fined by HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) as a result.<\/p>\n<p>A further one in 14 small business owners said that they had previously missed their tax return deadline on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, HMRC\u2019s own data revealed that the UK Government had dished out approximately \u00a387million in fines on account of late tax returns.<\/p>\n<p>Any late tax returns incur an immediate fixed penalty of \u00a3100, followed by fines of \u00a310 per day up to a maximum of \u00a3900, after three months. If a return is late by six months or more, a penalty of either \u00a3300 or 5 per cent of the tax due \u2013 whichever is higher \u2013 will then apply.
