{"id":1609,"date":"2016-11-24T09:52:03","date_gmt":"2016-11-24T09:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1609"},"modified":"2016-11-24T09:52:03","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T09:52:03","slug":"upward-trend-in-total-uk-tax-revenue-over-past-five-years-says-nao-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/upward-trend-in-total-uk-tax-revenue-over-past-five-years-says-nao-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Upward trend in total UK tax revenue over past five years, says NAO report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) raised \u00a3536.8billion in the 2015\/16 financial year, according to a performance summary carried out by the National Audit Office (NAO).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The NAO\u2019s probe revealed that tax revenue has risen steadily over the past five years, and confirmed that the tax authority secured compliance yield of \u00a326.6bn over a target of \u00a326.3bn in 2015\/16.<\/p>\n<p>The report also found that the \u2018tax gap\u2019 as a percentage of liabilities had decreased from 8.4 per cent to 6.4 per cent over the period 2005\/06 \u2013 2015\/16<\/p>\n<p>According to the NAO\u2019s report, the Revenue is undergoing a \u2018shift\u2019 in work emphasis \u2013 investing more time and money in enforcing compliance measures rather than in conducting investigations into non-compliance afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The NAO focused strongly on customer service as part of its review, following ongoing criticisms that the Revenue\u2019s customer service standards are diminishing in the wake of the Making Tax Digital (MTD) project \u2013 which is expected to cost HMRC approximately \u00a31.8bn.<\/p>\n<p>The report read: \u201cHMRC had maintained or improved customer service until the end of 2013\/14, but then released staff before it had made all the changes needed to reduce demand.
