{"id":1588,"date":"2016-11-10T10:09:22","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T10:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1588"},"modified":"2016-11-10T10:09:22","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T10:09:22","slug":"smes-held-back-by-lack-of-business-knowledge-says-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/smes-held-back-by-lack-of-business-knowledge-says-study\/","title":{"rendered":"SMEs held back by \u2018lack of business knowledge\u2019, says study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research suggests that as many as three quarters of Britain\u2019s Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) feel that their \u2018lack of business knowledge and experience\u2019 is holding them back \u2013 particularly when it comes to exploring new markets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The study, recently highlighted by <em>Business Matters <\/em>magazine, found that the majority of SMEs have a \u2018limited understanding\u2019 of local markets \u2013 and even less understanding of overseas trade or multinational markets.<\/p>\n<p>A large number of SMEs said that complicated regulations and business red tape were holding them back from exploring new markets and expanding their business.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite the fact that, of those businesses that were already active in new markets and exporting to other countries, 73 per cent said that international trade was crucial to their firms\u2019 future growth.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Emmerson, of HSBC bank, said: \u201cPerception is often worse than reality when it comes to exporting\u2026 once they take that first step, many SMEs find that it isn\u2019t as difficult as they had feared. What\u2019s needed is reassurance and guidance through those early days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBritain is full of dynamic entrepreneurs who want to look beyond their own borders but amid Brexit uncertainty, they\u2019re struggling to see how it can be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s more, they often feel the resources they need can be hard to find.
