{"id":1350,"date":"2016-06-13T10:28:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T10:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1350"},"modified":"2016-06-13T10:28:10","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T10:28:10","slug":"firms-call-upon-hmrc-for-new-tax-breaks-to-beat-long-term-sick-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bainesjewitt.co.uk\/blog\/firms-call-upon-hmrc-for-new-tax-breaks-to-beat-long-term-sick-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"Firms call upon HMRC for new tax breaks to beat long-term sick leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Employers and SMEs across the UK are calling for new tax breaks after a study revealed that firms\u2019 productivity is falling due an increase in long term absences.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The news comes following a recent study, which quizzed some 300 manufacturing sector businesses on their employee habits \u2013 and found that long term absences had risen significantly in the past two years for at least two fifths of firms.<\/p>\n<p>Industry body, the EEF manufacturers\u2019 organisation, which conducted the survey, is now calling upon HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) to offer tax breaks to businesses to combat the \u201cchronic\u201d problem.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Government must now use fiscal incentives to encourage employers to pay for private medical treatment and allow it to be offset in the same way as other business expenses,\u201d said Terry Woolmer, head of health and safety policy at EEF.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come after the EEF survey revealed that confidence in UK GP\u2019s to improve return-to-work rates had fallen significantly since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only would this help take the pressure off the NHS but it would allow a speedier return to work.
