HMRC announces another restructure

In the wake of ongoing criticisms surrounding Making Tax Digital (MTD), HM Revenue & Customs has announced plans for another reorganisation of its operations.

HMRC chief executive Jon Thompson has announced that the tax authority will be restructuring into three smaller, better skilled groups: customer services, customer compliance and customer strategy and tax design.

“[The reorganisation] will enable us to deepen our specialist skills and knowledge, by bringing together teams engaged in similar work, allowing us to respond more flexibly and speedily to changing business and customer needs,” said Mr Thompson.

“These changes will help us to become an organisation that is truly focused on customers, providing great customer service and designing policies, products and processes with customers in mind,” he added.

The comments follow ongoing criticisms regarding HMRC’s diminishing customer services, as the Revenue moves full speed ahead with Making Tax Digital.

A study carried out by Simply Business found that Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) felt continually let down by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

In fact, a staggering 96 per cent of UK SME’s quizzed said that they had been kept waiting on the phone by the tax authority.

However, separate HMRC announcements made in recent days have revealed that the Revenue will extend its helpline opening hours as part of its new operations overhaul.
