Account payments to some RBS customers ‘missing’

Hundreds of thousands of NatWest and RBS customers were this morning facing banking issues as the company admitted “some” payments were “missing” from accounts.

RBS’ press office said a glitch with overnight payment processes had now been fixed though it will take time for transactions to be resolved.

This issue has affected 600,000 transactions across RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank. An investigation will begin in due course.

RBS sought to reassure customers by communicating: “We will ensure no customers are left out of pocket as a result of this issue”.

At 07:47 this morning the Natwest Help Twitter account tweeted the following message: “Some Customer payments are missing this morning – we are investigating this issue as a matter of urgency”.

A minute later it added: “We are looking into fixing this ASAP and funds will show as normal once the system is back to normal”.

Payments including tax credits and disability living allowance are among the payments that have failed to be credited to accounts.

The group has previously been hit by a major IT meltdown.

A spokesman for RBS said: “To any customers concerned about the implications of this issue, we advise them to get in touch with our call centres or come into a branch where our staff will be ready to help.”

This will be an embarrassment for the group which was fined £56m by regulators after a 2012 software issue left millions of customers unable to access accounts.

RBS, NatWest, and Ulster Bank customers were affected in June 2012 after problems with a software upgrade. On that occasion, the IT failure affected more than 6.5 million customers in the UK over several weeks.

The banking group said it had invested hundreds of millions of pounds to improve its computer systems since then.
