Two star players from Darlington Mowden Park R.F.C – the local side sponsored by Baines Jewitt – have helped England to a historic victory at the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Captain Katy McLean and lock forward Tamara Taylor played in Sunday’s final, with the Red Roses securing a 21-9 win over Canada.
Victory in Paris ended a bitterly disappointing run for England, who finished as runners-up in the previous three tournaments.
It is only the second time ever they have lifted the trophy, having last been the champions 20 years ago.
“We’ve worked hard for this, so many legends have gone before us who haven’t won and that’s about them today,” said Katy.
“It’s about the whole rugby family. We had to work hard today. Canada were fantastic and it’s absolutely amazing that we did it.”
Baines Jewitt sponsored Darlington Mowden Park for the first time last year and last month confirmed the arrangement would continue for the next two seasons.
